The Sutras of Mahayana Buddhists claim him king in a remote period of time, but he renounced his kingdom and became a monk. His empathy for the misery of all human beings moved him to make 48 vows, promises to delay his enlightenment until he could establish the Pure Land where all could be liberated from their human suffering. It was centuries before he could complete all these vows. Along with Avalokiteshwara and Mahasthampraptta, he forms the Western Trinity.
