Hindu myth tells the creation story of Ganesh in the Shiva Purana. In the tale, the goddess Parvati creates a baby from the her own body and sets him with the task of guarding her bathroom. When her husband the god Shiva returns home, he is shocked to find a stranger preventing him from entering his home and severs the boy's head in a rage. Consumed with grief, Parvati is inconsolable so Shiva sends his troops to find any sleeping creature to steal its head. The soldiers bring back the head of an elephant and Shiva attaches it to the baby's body and brings it back to life. He makes Ganesh his general and bestows upon him a boon that people will worship him. The dimensions of this bronze statue are 6"W (15cm).
