Manjusri is a bodhisattva, or "enlightened being" who is revered in Mahaayaana Buddhism and closely linked to the wisdom of awakening. In Vajrayana Buddhis he is the "Yidam," the meditational deity who embodies enlightened wisdom. Buddhist lore suggest he was a former buddha who returned to become the teacher of seven successive Buddhas.
